5100 Joint Institute for Computational Sciences
This state-owned building is home to ORNL’s core partnerships with the University of Tennessee:
The Joint Institute for Computational Sciences (JICS) was founded to advance scientific discovery and knowledge of computational modeling and simulation, and to educate the next generation of researchers in using computational techniques to address scientific problems. JICS joint faculty members hold dual positions as UT faculty members and ORNL staff scientists.
Managed by UT, the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) is one of the leading high performance computing centers for excellence in the United States. Its flagship computing resource is Darter, a supercomputer named after a freshwater fish native to East Tennessee.
