The MAXLAB—or Maximum Building Energy Efficiency Research Laboratory—is one of the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center’s (BTRIC) state-of-the-art facilities where researchers are developing new ways to improve the energy efficiency and durability of residential and commercial buildings. MAXLAB contains a high-bay area where entire walls can be tested for air and moisture resistance—under any weather conditions encountered in the United States. The low-bay area contains a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning laboratory and HVAC environmental chambers. These laboratories enable ORNL scientists to work with researchers from industry to develop next-generation heat pumps and other energy-saving appliances and technologies.
