1520 BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) & Joint Institute for Biological Sciences (JIBS)
Building 1520 is home to the BioEnergy Science Center (BESC), a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research center that focuses on developing varieties of switchgrass and poplar trees that can easily be processed into biofuels. Researchers draw on the lab’s expertise in bioscience, high performance computing and neutron scattering to better understand biomass production.
The Joint Institute for Biological Sciences (JIBS) is also located in Building 1520. JIBS is an interdisciplinary research facility that provides UT-ORNL faculty, staff and students access to state-of-the-art research facilities in biology and biotechnology.
